Lawrie Wright.........
It is with much sadness that we report that Lawrie Wright, a former County player and member of the County for 66 years died on 27th September. He made his debut for the County, at the age of 20, in the last match of the 1960 season and went on to play 49 championship matches between 1960 and 1972 scoring 1,559 runs. For three years in this period he lectured in New Zealand at Auckland University. His highest score was 94 in a nine wicket win against Cambridgeshire at Hitchin in 1964. Although a prolific opening batsman for Hertford, he only opened the batting for the County in 20 of his 82 innings normally batting at 4, 5 or 6. Lawrie and his father (Les) are one of only six fathers and sons who have played for the County and he was awarded his County Cap after his most successful season of 1964 in which he scored 409 runs.
He started in Hertford’s 2nd XI at the age of 13 and went on to score more than 11,500 runs for the 1st XI and more than 21,700 for the club overall. He and Laurie Clough were a formidable opening pair with ten century partnerships for the 1st XI. In 1972, he and his father started the Colts section which has thrived ever since. He continued to support youngsters as he moved down the sides captaining the 2nd XI and 3rd XI and playing in the 4th XI where, in his late 50s, he took part in two opening partnerships in excess of 250 in 1998 and 1999.
Lawrie was made a Life Member of Hertford CC in 1998 and he continued to be a regular supporter at Balls Park right up to the last few weeks of his life.
We extend our sympathies to his family and many friends at Hertford.
