Chance to Shine Awards 2016.....
Elsa Barnfather was named Participant of the Year for 2016 at the Chance to Shine Awards, which took place last night (Wednesday 2nd November) at Lord's Cricket Ground.
Elsa, a student at Simon Balle All Through School in Hertford, received her award as recognition for her participation in cricket since over the last 12 months and outstanding contributions towards the programme and Satellite Club (in partnership with Hertford Cricket Club and supported by Herts Sports Partnership) within her School.
The judging panel noted that as well as being a fearsome cricketer, Elsa is also a leader and a role model to her team-mates. Elsa captains the school girls’ team and this year led them to the 2016 Hertfordshire County Finals. This year she has been selected to play for the Hertfordshire age group team. Elsa also plays for the school boys’ team and has become an integral part of the side.
Elsa’s enthusiasm, approachable manner and commitment has led to more girls joining in with the sport. Her success has raised aspirations of the other girls at Simon Balle school. She leads by example, supporting her team-mates and encouraging the younger students. She is a key figure in the school’s cricket scene and a vital part in its success.
After receiving her award Elsa said “I’m really proud to have won the award, so shocked but really pleased. It’s been such an overwhelming evening but it’s an amazing feeling to win the award. I would encourage other girls who are thinking about taking the game up to give it a go, give it a shot and if you believe in yourself then you can do it.”
This is the 2nd time in 3 years that a Hertfordshire participant has won the "National Participant of the Year" category, following on from Holly Grace, who won the award in 2014.
A full report of the awards evening is available on the Chance to Shine Website and videos of all winners (similar to Elsa's above) can be found on Chance to Shine's YouTube Channel.
