Abbots Langley Women & Girls.......
CLUB – ABBOTS LANGLEY CRICKET CLUB
What does your club currently offer Women and Girls?
The club offer a full range of options for both women and girls. Starting from the All Stars on a Friday evening for Year 1 and Year 2 girls to a hard ball women’s team that compete in the top division of the Home Counties Women’s Cricket League (previous the Four Counties Womens League). In between those two options the club are hoping to run the new Dynamo sessions for girls in Years 3 to 6 in 2021. Also In 2021 the club are planning to run an U11 softball team, plus an U15 team and hopefully an U13 team in the Hertfordshire Junior Cricket League. As well as a women’s hardball team, the club have now established a women’s softball team on the back of successful prosecco cricket evenings. In the Summer months training for juniors happens on Sunday mornings while the ladies train on Monday evenings (although Junior training can also take place on Monday evenings too). Games for the U11/U13/U15 occur on evenings and weekends in the Summer. Indoor winter training is normally arranged for Sunday afternoons.
When and how was the women section set up.?
Club member Trevor Brown, now working for the ECB set up the girl’s section in 2004. A Womens section was set up 2012. The club has been at the forefront of women and girl’s cricket in Hertfordshire, being one of the first clubs to enter the girls' league’s in the Hertfordshire Junior League and also the Home Counties Women’s Cricket League. In 2014 the club were the only Hertfordshire girls’ side to enter the nationwide Lady Taverners competition and the same squad managed to win the Audrey Collins U13 trophy for the next 3 years at U13 level. This led to opportunities for the players to become involved in Hertfordshire County squads up to the full women’s county side. The Women’s side as grown since then and in 2018 hosted a visiting Australian touring side which subsequently had a recent WBBL player in their ranks. Also, the club now has five Level 2 ECB qualified coaches for the women and girl’s section alone, including 2 female coaches.
Finally, where the girls are interested, we have supported them (aged 14-16) to sign up to the Young Activators Course or assisted them through their Duke of Edinburgh Awards through the cricket programme.
How has it been this season?
Like most cricket clubs it has been challenging in 2020. However, the Women’s team manged to play both hardball and softball games. For the younger age groups, the All-star program began in July and the U13 and U15 played some friendlies against other local clubs. Training was well attended on both Sunday mornings and Monday evenings.
