Members will be sad to hear that Alistair Buchanan died on Saturday. Alistair had been a member of the County for 57 years of which 48 were on the committee. He ran the Hertfordshire Young Cricketers for 18 years before being HCCA’s Chairman for a further 19 years and then President for four years to 2017.
Alistair was in the 1st XI at St. Albans School for four years and became a good club cricketer, joining Welwyn Garden City CC when he was 15. He was captain for three years (1965 to 1967), the last of which they were undefeated throughout the season.
A booklet was produced in 1971 to celebrate the Club’s 50th year in which eleven people were named as major contributors to the club over that period. Alistair was one of them.
It has been Alistair’s off-field work that has benefited the County. He became a member of the committee in 1970. In 1975 he took up the role of Chairman & Treasurer of the Colts and immediately renamed them as Hertfordshire Young Cricketers. The organisation improved considerably under his chairmanship.
In 1993 he was elected Chairman of HCCA at a time when the annual income of the County was £35,000. He oversaw major changes during his time of being Chairman as the ECB drove counties to increase participation in grass roots cricket. In 2008 he was a founder Director of HCL and over a number of years all aspects of representative cricket and grass roots cricket was transferred to HCL. When he retired from being chairman the income of Hertfordshire Cricket had increased to £200,000 and he had set strong foundations which have allowed us to grow substantially since.
He was elected President of HCCA in 2014 and it was fitting that he was our President when we participated in a match at Lord’s against the MCC to celebrate the Lord’s bi-centenary.
We send our sincere condolences to Elizabeth his wife, Caroline his daughter, Giles his son and their families.
James Wright
President
Hertfordshire County Cricket Association
