Frequently asked questions – COVID 19
Throughout this difficult period, HCL would like to keep the cricket network as informed as possible. We have had plenty of questions form yourselves in the club network, searching for further clarity and implications of recent events, so here is an overview of where we are at and what we know to date:
Are the ECB providing advice to clubs about how to mitigate the financial impact of a season with potentially a good proportion of costs being incurred, e.g. for pitch/equipment maintenance with likely very low-income levels?
We are sure this advice will follow from the ECB in due course as the picture becomes clearer, but we would encourage all clubs to identify the key short, medium and long term challenges facing them and begin to address these as soon as possible.
Within the financial side clubs should take steps to reduce any costs wherever possible and to identify the potential losses that may be incurred should the season be reduced or unable to start at all. Speak to all relevant suppliers and stakeholders to try and reduce or delay expenditure and wherever possible put a hold on projects (e.g. capital expenditure).
We know many clubs will struggle to get through a prolonged break in the game, but those clubs that can tighten their belts in order to survive should begin doing so immediately.
Is the ECB or CCBs going to release additional emergency funds to clubs?
At this stage there is no information available to confirm anything. ECB are working incredibly hard to look at safeguarding the cricket network during these times. We also hope that the government will put measures in place to support the sports sector in due course.
The registration process is now virtually complete, and we are holding subscriptions. Any advice on How should we respond to requests for refunds?
At this stage we would recommend that clubs deal with requests for refunds on a case by case basis. At this stage we are hopeful that there will be an opportunity for some cricket to take place this season. We recommend that clubs communicate with their members emphasising the importance of everyone working together for the benefit of the club during this difficult time.
How will COVID-19 effect the league season?
Given the recent indication from the government of a 12 week period of social distancing, the current feeling is that the season will be significantly affected but it is in everyone’s interests to try and make the very best of what time may be available to us, should the government guidance allow cricket to be played.
How will the Hertfordshire Junior League season be affected?
HJL (Herts Junior League) have sent out a statement today. Please see here:
Is there any advice on maintenance of grounds and the costs it will take to do so with the risk of no cricket this season?
We are seeking guidance from the ECB regarding this question as it has come up a few times. ECB are producing a document to cover the question. In the meantime, We refer to our need as a game to support the latest government instructions & guidelines issued start the beginning of this week.
Will re-payments of ECB loans be suspended?
This question has been passed onto the ECB who will be making further announcements in the coming days.
Should we suspend matches scheduled to take place in April and May, how much notice will there be that cricket can re-commence?
The game will be led by medical and scientific guidance in terms of when it is deemed safe and appropriate for cricket to re-commence. We strongly encourage clubs to work pragmatically and flexibly this season so that the game can make the most of any opportunity to get out playing and practicing. Unfortunately, it is impossible to put a specific timeframe on the notice, but we feel up to 4 weeks may be needed to mobilise once cricket is given the all clear to go ahead. If we can work more quickly than this, we will do so.
Can club members use the facilities such as nets?
The suspension is on all recreational cricket activity and we believe clubs should not encourage members to use club facilities at this time. The key issue here is ensuring that social distancing is supported by the game as a whole and we want to avoid situations where clubs inadvertently create social gatherings during this period
Can coaches still run 1-2-1 sessions indoors or outdoors?
Will 121s have to stop inside and or outside? The suspension is on all recreational cricket and this includes 1-2-1 training and small group training. We refer to our need as a game to support the social distancing measures the government has put in place along with stopping non-essential travel.
Is there a set period of suspension of all recreational cricket?
There is no timescale at this stage on the suspension and by not committing to a specific date this provides a degree of flexibility should the current situation improve.
What will be happening with All Stars and Dynamos (National Products)?
We have not heard anything regarding All Stars just yet. Given All Stars’ flexibility as a programme we are hopeful that this programme can take place in some form.
We all have an important role to play in the coming weeks (as the schools close) to engage with our junior members and keep their interest levels high. Hertfordshire Cricket will be looking to pull together some fun and light-hearted content aimed at trying to get everyone playing some form of cricket at home. We would encourage clubs to think about how they can do this with their own members as well over the coming weeks.
