It is with great sadness that we report the death yesterday (24th October) of Bob Pomphrey who played for the County between 1971 and 1985. He played and captained St Albans CC, later being elected an Hon Life Member.
Bob was a regular member of the very successful Frank Collyer era. He was a positive stroke player and from 1975 to 1981 formed a successful opening partnership with Wayne Osman. His most successful season was 1976 in which he scored 780 runs including five 50s and one century - 122 not out against Norfolk when he and David Ottley had an unbroken 2nd wicket partnership of 200 scored in 95 minutes which was a County record at the time until it was broken in 2001. In 1979 he and Osman had an opening partnership of 194 against Northumberland, also a County record at the time.
In addition to the runs he scored there must be added those he saved. He patrolled the covers and saved many runs with his “speed off the mark” and hard, flat throw. He played 98 Championship matches for the County scoring 4,132 runs (ave 25.66). He continued to support the County having been a member of the Association for over 50 years.
Bob was educated at Chichester Boys High School where he played in the 1st XI with John Snow, later to be one of England’s finest fast bowlers.
We send our condolences to Judy, his wife, and his team mates of the 1970s and 80s many of whom have kept in close contact with Bob.
