CLUB - BISHOP'S STORTFORD LADIES CRICKET CLUB
Bishop’s Stortford Cricket club was founded in 1825 and remains one of the leading sides in Hertfordshire, with four senior mens sides, one ladies team, and a thriving junior boys/ girls section.
BSCC Ladies section are now in their 13th year, originally entering the Four Counties Women’s Cricket league in 2008 and then joining the Women’s Cricket Southern league. They gained back to back promotions in 2015 / 2016 to now play in the premier division, with their top finish of 3rd in 2017. The ladies section was originally set up with the help of the Witherden family who were heavily involved in supporting the team with Nigel coaching, Nicola managing and Rebecca captaining over the first 10 years. Since this point many other members have now got involved to keep the side growing and 3 years ago Joe Clune decided to take the lead and set up the junior girls section to allow a pathway for women and girls to pass through. The club now host a an U11 soft ball and U13 & U15 hard ball girls sides as well, with the girls regularly also playing alongside the boys in boys competitions.
One of the highlights of the ladies team is winning the national T20 finals day 2019 held in Newport, Wales. Due to COVID-19 the competition did not run in 2020 so the side remains the national champions and are looking forward to fighting to retain the title in 2021.
The 2020 season was a first for all due to COVID-19 restrictions meaning the league had to take the difficult decision to cancel cricket. However the team managed to play a number of friendlies throughout the year giving all members of the team a game. We managed to play a number of new sides including 3 closely fought games against Herts Women’s county XI, resulting in 2 wins (T20) for BSCC and 1 (40 overs) for Herts. We also hosted Cambridge university and saw a resounding win against Thriplow to end the season.
The ladies plan to remain in the Women’s Cricket Southern league into 2021 and hope to continue to grow the section. We will be recruiting over the winter to try to strengthen the side and defend our national T20 title as well as try to better our top 3 finish from 4 years ago in the league.
Increasing our membership may also allow up to start a development side into the future.
