Herts lose last game by 106 runs
Free Foresters v Herts at Wellington College 10/11th August 2010
Amazingly, with the amount of rain that fell all day, 11 overs were played on the first day. Herts, fielding four Under 17's, were put into bat and reached 58 without loss. Matt Hill (38) and Jay O’Nien (17) played confidently before the heavens opened up again and play was abandoned for the day mid afternoon.
It was decided to play a 50 over match on day two. Free Foresters, who also fielded a young side, lost three wickets for 38 before skipper Tom Cox and J Webster (40) added 110 for the fourth wicket. Cox and J Porter’s (36) partnership of 90 ended with the dismissal of Cox for a fine 103 (off 120 balls). Richard Howett thrashed 35 to take the hosts to 302–7 off their allotted overs. A fine recovery by Foresters, while Herts will rue the 32 wides conceded. Under 17 opening bowler Will Thorne took 3-62 and Andy Nolan 2-46.
Several Herts batsmen got a start, but good spin bowling, particularly from Paul Byrne 3-21 (who played for Staffordshire versus Herts in the recent Minor Counties match), F Beg 3-60 and A Fiskin 2-58 kept Free Foresters in control. Nesan Jeyaratnam’s 37 and an unbeaten 48 from Will Van der Maat were the highlights of the Herts batting, which ended in 44th over, all out for 196, giving Free Foresters a deserved victory by 106 runs.
Herts N Jeyaratnam capt and Will Van der Maat (Potters Bar), Louis Champion (Knebworth Park), Will Oxley (Langleybury), Matt Hill, Andy Nolan, Liam Mitchell and Alex Chalker (all Welwyn GC), Jake Pankhurst (Harpenden), Will Thorne (Hoddesdon), Jay O’Nien (Hemel Hempstead Town).
